Celebrate Safely This Independence Day
Published:
The 4th of July is a time of celebration. Fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings. But alongside the excitement comes a lesser-known risk: eye injuries. Each year, thousands of people suffer preventable eye damage during Independence Day festivities, many of which can lead to permanent vision loss.
At Cascade Vision Center, our patients are like family, and your eye health is always top of mind. With just a few simple precautions, you can enjoy every firework, smile, and sunset safely this Independence Day.
Have Fun, Stay Safe
Fireworks are beautiful, but they can also be unpredictable. A little awareness goes a long way in preventing eye injuries.
Here’s how to keep your celebration safe and stress-free.
- Enjoy the show from a safe distance — Public fireworks displays are not only more spectacular, they’re also much safer. Sit back, relax, and take in the show without the risk.
- Protect your eyes — If you’re around fireworks (even sparklers!), consider wearing protective eyewear. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference, especially for kids!
- Watch the little ones closely — We know kids love sparklers, but they can burn much hotter than expected. Make it a family rule: grown-ups handle the fireworks, and everyone keeps a safe distance.
- Skip the risks, keep the memories — Never relight fireworks that didn’t go off, and avoid holding anything that’s lit. It’s all about keeping your celebration carefree and fun.
If Something Doesn’t Feel Right
Even with the best precautions, accidents can happen. If you notice eye pain, redness, or vision changes after fireworks exposure, don’t wait and call us right away on (425) 235-9911.
And remember:
- Don't rub or pressure the eye
- Don’t try to ‘fix’ it yourself
- Do seek care as soon as possible
